Mount Meru Trekking

Hiking Mount Meru, the fifth-highest peak in Africa, is an extraordinary adventure offering breathtaking views of the Arusha region and a distant glimpse of Mount Kilimanjaro. This dormant stratovolcano, located just north of Arusha, rises 4,562 meters (14,968 feet) above sea level and is surrounded by Arusha National Park, home to diverse wildlife such as elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, monkeys, and leopards. On a clear day, Mount Meru is visible from Kilimanjaro, enhancing the sense of adventure.

The ascent begins at a circular base 20 kilometers across, at 2,000 meters, with the summit area shaped like a giant horseshoe. The inner walls of the crater below the peak are among Africa’s tallest cliffs, towering over 1,500 meters. Within the crater, the Ash Cone adds to the dramatic scenery, making the climb a visually stunning experience.

While it’s possible to summit Mount Meru in one or two days, a three-day trek is recommended, with four days being ideal per park regulations. The hike provides excellent wildlife viewing opportunities, including diverse bird species and forest animals. It’s an ideal way to acclimate before tackling Kilimanjaro, being less challenging and more affordable. The best times to hike are during the dry seasons from June to early November and late January to March. Visitors can reach Mount Meru by flying or taking a bus to Arusha, from where guided treks are available. The descent to Rhino Point, along a narrow ridge between the crater’s exterior and the inner wall, is one of Africa’s most exhilarating routes.
